For me, this wasn’t said by someone I know; it was said by a cartoon character in a TV show called Bojack Horseman. Despite this being an animated Netflix show, it tries to deal with the darker aspects of the human condition in a respectable manner.
The particular line that I would like to draw attention to can be seen in this clip from the show, where the main character breaks up with his girlfriend:
You know, it’s funny. When you look at someone through rose coloured glasses, all the red flags just look like flags.
I’ve tried to take this concept on board in life. Sometimes we are blinded by people’s good sides, and so overlook the negatives. Is this person actually someone that we should want to spend time with, or have we just been charmed? Are we ignoring their bad behaviour because of our feelings towards them? Conversely, are we being overly critical of someone just because we don’t like them?
I think that I am quite guilty of thinking like this. I try and keep a check on my interpretations of actions if I think that I may be unduly biased by how well we get on socially- be that positively or negatively. I’m not going to claim I’m 100% effective in this, I still catch myself being terse with people that I have taken a dislike to for whatever reason. But, I try. I think that’s the best that we can do really: just, try.
